A food forest mimics what nature already does so well.
Just like a woodland, it’s made up of different layers—roots and groundcovers, herbs and shrubs, vines and fruiting bushes, small trees, tall trees, and everything in between.
Each layer plays a key role, helping the whole thrive. Plants support each other, feed the soil, attract helpful insects, and provide food and shelter for both people and wildlife.
Because it’s designed to work with nature—not against it—a food forest builds its own fertility, needing less energy to grow and maintain than other ways of producing food.
We’ve ordered the plants based on which layer of the food forest they’re found in. You can also use the drop down menu above to see a list of plants based on their uses (eg. medicinal, edible, ecological). Click on individual plants below to get detailed information about each. And to see a full list of plants growing in each layer, then simply click on the layer you’re interested in.
